Power hitting with Julian Wood – camán and sliotars

I attended a fascinating Power Hitting Masterclass with Julian Wood at the MCC Cricket Academy, yesterday. Sunday evening saw a dozen coaches having a lot of fun hitting balls.

Lots of ideas on how to help others hit harder and smarter – and it was a little drill to develop wrist speed and flexibility when hitting, with hurling stick and balls (the camán and sliotars of the title), that I think might try out (if I can just get hold of the equipment). (more…)

Change the game…or change the coach? ECB Coaches Association Conference, part 3

The theme for the 2017 ECB Coaches Conference was “change the game”.

Over the weekend, we were challenged to think about how we coach, what we coach, about the type of coach we were or aspired to be, even about the environment in which we coach.

So perhaps, rather than changing the game, we were really being challenged to change the coach! (more…)

The challenge of games – ECB Coaches Association Conference review, part 2

I have written previously about my conversion to games-based practice, but also about the challenges I have encountered when trying to design appropriate games.

So when I saw that Ian Renshaw, co-author of “the best book on non-linear pedagogy I have ever read”, and father (and coach) of Aussie opener Matt, was speaking at the ECB Coaches Conference, I knew I had to book in for his sessions straight away.

And with Professor Chris Cushion, speaking on the Challenge of Games, providing the (very necessary) counter-view to the “game as teacher” mantra, I had a lot of games-based learning to look forward to.

And I wasn’t disappointed.
