    At the weekend, I watched London Seaward FC play Hackney Women’s FC in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

    A proper cup tie — skill, energy, drama. Hackney came back strongly in the second half, after their keeper was sent off, but the extra player counted in the end as Seaward ran out 3-1 winners.

    Although my football coaching badge lapsed 7 years ago, I couldn’t help watching the patterns of play. And wondering what Seaward’s coaches (and data analyst) might have made of the game.

  • Do coaches need to demo?

    Should coaches be expected to deliver competent, accurate demonstrations of the skills they expect their players to develop?

    I had an immediate answer to this. Then I changed my mind. Twice. And now I’m not sure.

  • England know they have a fast-bowling problem…is this really the solution?

    Will Macpherson posted a fascinating article ($$) the other day on the latest iteration of the ECB’s project to develop more quick bowlers for England international teams.

    It is an intriguing insight into the development philosophy at the ECB, but it does pose some interesting questions.

    • Pace first, then variations, then accuracy?
    • Every bowler is an individual…but they have to fit the pace blueprint!
    • What incentive is there for Counties to nurture (and play) these young pace prospects, when they (the bowlers) are being encouraged to view accuracy & control as secondary skills?
