    You’ve walked how many steps? Tracking coaching activity.

    After a busy day of coaching, I often get home feeling pretty tired. It’s hard work. And I’m not getting any younger.

    That said, I am probably fitter than I was before I started coaching regularly in 2014 (as evidenced by being able to fit into a pair of walking trousers that I had “out-grown” nearly 10 years ago!).

    So I was interested to see just how much exercise I was getting.

    When Opening Up Cricket announced a campaign to encourage people to walk 10,000 steps a day to boost mental and physical health, I saw an opportunity to monitor my overall activity, at work and generally.

    So, armed with a new fitness tracker, I have been recording my activity every day, coaching, commuting and recreational.

  • 2020 Vision — new decade, new coaching opportunities

    One clear theme is emerging in my coaching diary for the start of the year — in 2020 I will be doing much more to support cricket for girls.

    The start of the year will see a focus on coaching in schools:

    • three schools signed up through the Team Up programme, via Essex Cricket in the Community — upwards of 50 hours with yr7, 8 & 9 girls before Easter;
    • one of the schools has asked if I can run an after-school club for the girls.

  • In reply to “BE BETTER: You are only as good as your last session”

    Rob Maslin (@mazzacricket87) posted a searingly honest, reflective piece last week, looking at his 10 years’ coaching experience, and some of the lessons he has learned.

    Coaches are being encouraged to become more self-reflective, but it is rare to see this reflection shared so openly.

    But where Rob has led, perhaps others should follow.

    So…10 years on from earning my first coaching badge, what more can go wrong?
