Player centred coaching begins with…PLAY!

I have just received a training script for a tutoring assignment, training new Activators, who will be working with 5-8 yr olds, completely new to the sport.

And it includes the following statement.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT: “The basic starting point for being player centred is understanding the skill and technical needs of that player…

Which seems some way removed from my own understanding of player-centred coaching, and distanced from the child-first approach advocated by Play Their Way.

The script includes the eminently sensible suggestion that new Activators should adopt a “player centred” approach.

But that approach begins, apparently, by considering the “skill and technical needs” of the players.

Who might be 5 years old, and completely new to cricket.

For volunteer Activators who do not need any previous cricket or sports experience. And for the parent volunteers, whose only qualifications are a willingness to help and a valid DBS check.

Beginning with a skills deficit approach (“what don’t they know?”) seems a poor place to start with any player, but especially with the 5 year olds. Because they will need to learn practically everything about the great game.

Player centred coaching begins with the player.

In fact, at this age, I’d go further.

Player centred coaching begins with play.

Oh lord, yes. I mean, I coached college rugby in the U.S. for several years and even at that age and dealing with people who had, by and large, been playing sport(s) for years, though not usually rugby, we still began and consistently developed practices and coaching to be player-first. We must have done well with skill development (we made play-offs regularly, got promoted through the leagues), but we also ended up with one of the largest clubs in the region, having started with barely one XV. And I have no doubt it was because players always came first.
