  • More clarity on how to use the CLA — what don’t we know?

    Recently, Rob Gray posted a podcast in response to an article requesting “more research-informed guidelines” to support the constraints-led approach (CLA) in coaching.

    Well worth a listen for anyone interested in what the CLA really is.

    I do share Rob’s suspicions about the authors’ (mis)understanding of the CLA.

    But I also think the paper does raise some valid questions about how to apply the CLA, especially for new and volunteer coaches.

    Where’s the evidence? A multitude of “n=1”s

    Last month I attended a fascinating event, “Playing by the Rules: Using the CLA to your Advantage”, hosted by Alex Lascu and Alex Sarama.

    Lots of open conversation around how to make CLA work — very practical, not too much theory.

    One of the questions that came up on the evening was the availability (or absence) of evidence to support the wider application of the CLA.

    I do believe that it is there.

    It’s just that no-one has bothered to report the evidence.†

  • Talking about the CLA — do we need to mind our language?

    Last week I attended Playing by the Rules: Using the CLA to your Advantage, a fascinating event hosted by Alex Lascu and Alex Sarama.

    Part workshop, part therapy session, covering a range of issues with adopting a constraints-led approach (CLA) in coaching.

    The conversation in the room was very interesting, but I wonder if some of the language was overly complicated.

    Perhaps we need a new way of talking about the CLA?
