Just watching some cricket, again — T20 Blast

A couple of days ago I posted an idea for coaching tactical analysis during lockdown and even developing game awareness. Very simplistic — watch a video, and try to work out what is going on.

In the second part of this series, I have found a video of a remarkable match from the 2019 Vitality Blast, featuring the eventual champions, Essex, hosting London rivals Surrey.

As before, the challenge for your players is to watch, analyse, and begin to formulate their own tactical responses.

After a rain delay, the match was reduced to 15 overs per side, and the action rattles along. It’s well worth watching the whole game, but I have suggested analysing the 5th over of the Essex innings.

The attached files include a couple of sample scripts. The questions are mine, and might well be inappropriate for your players. Change them, make them challenge the young players you work with.

Exercise 1 — watching the batters

Exercise 2 — you are the bowler…good luck!

Perhaps you could also take the opportunity to help them to consider what skills they might need to develop to perform at this level — do they need to be stronger or faster, to learn new skills, to be that bit braver when they step on to the field?
